Magic just doesn't seem to follow the rules. There are things people understand about the world that we live in, how it works and how it will go on and a cause and effect that humanity can reasonably rely on. Sometimes it is much greater than we can fully understand, and sometimes it is so minuscule that we don't think to look for it, but it all follows the same rules. When it comes to magic, though, none of those normal earthly rules apply. The causes are all different, the reactions are all backwards, up can be down and what was there can suddenly not be. Most people don't even believe in magic. It does have its own rules, though. Things don't just disappear-- they have to go somewhere. A man doesn't just take to the air-- he is lifted. The great problem with magic is, even the gifted few who are able to use it don't always understand these rules. Someone has to keep it all in balance. Someone has to make sure there are no debts owed and the currents along which everything moves are not disturbed. The Sorcerer Supreme can't just keep cleaning up messes in the young magicians' wake, though. Sometimes, they have to learn to take the care themselves.
